Day 4: In Word & Deed

Black and white photograph of a Neumann U87 mi...

“Most good things have been said far too many times and just need to be lived.” – Shane Claiborne

It’s crazy and crowed wherever you go this time of year. Put to practice loving a stranger today by letting others go infront of you – at the store, driving in your car, when at your local coffee shop; maybe even while waiting for a table at a busy restaurant.

“If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.” – 1 Corinthians 13:1

Day 3: World View

Today {Day 3: World View} we remember our beautiful girl Rakhelda we spounsor through World Vision. Three years ago we made in ornament with her picture on it and we hang it up on the tree and say a special prayer of bless on her and her family. It is also her birthday next month and today helps remind us to put her gift in the mail. We’ve been sponsoring Rakhelda since she was 5 or 6 (I was in college @ the time) and now she is turning 15 years old!!! She is a beautiful young lady now with dreams of becoming a teacher. She works so hard @ school and has a shinning smile that will light up your day.

We try to talk with the boys about her as much as we can. We have a flag with a push-pin to mark where Rakhelda lives on the map in the boys room. I hope to learn and teach the boy more about her and her culture over this next year.

Dear Rakhelda-

you are a beautiful addition to our family! We love to look at your picture and see how much you have grown and changed over the years. We are so very proud of you. We pray that God will pour down blessings on you and your family over this next year. We pray that you will hear and know the voice of God in your life and you will follow after it with all you heart soul and mind. We love you so much!

Love: Scott, Shannon, JC & Micah

Do you have a sponsored child? Do you have any special traditions you do with your kids to help them connect more with him/her?

Day 2:: second chances

“A Christian being stingy with grace is like a firefighter being stingy with water.” – Mike Foster

Christmas = the birth of the ultimate second chance for you, for me, and for ALL people.

Think of someone that wronged you or hurt you deeply – Ask God to forgive your anger or bitter heart, then pray that God pours out blessings over them this Christmas season and this coming New Year.

What better gift could you receive this Christmas then a heart freed from chains of anger/bitterness.

“Even if it’s personal against you and repeated seven times through the day, and seven times he says, ‘I’m sorry, I won’t do it again,’ forgive him.” Luke 17:4

Have you ever been overwhelmed by another’s forgiveness of you?

Day #9:: Red Ribbon…of HOPE!

“The attention of the world might sometimes be elsewhere, but history is watching. It’s taking notes. And it’s going to hold us to account, each of us.” – Bono

I’m wearing a red ribbon on my wrist today as a reminder to remember and pray for all the victims of AIDS – both locally and globally.

“When the story of these times gets written, we want it to say that we did all we could, and it was more than anyone could have imagined.” – Bono

“HIV/AIDS has been a stigma in the Church for too long. Our goal is to encourage others to show the love of Christ by caring for those infected and affected by this pandemic.” – Rick Warren

Day #7:: Orphans

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27 (NIV)

God cares deeply for orphans…

We see this not only in the new testament in Jesus’ teachings, but also in the Old testamant. God has called us to visit with those that are orphaned, “episkeptomai” in the greek, as He episkeptmai with us with Jesus. Christ did not have brief chat with mankind. His visit was a direct, personal interaction with mankind.

In the US (in 2004) there were 2.9 orphans. Today there are estimated over 143 million orphans in the world. That is enough children to go three times around the world at the equator.  – OrphansHope.org

 Today’s GOODxmas call to action is to find a local foster care agency or international orphanage that you can send a gift or meet a need. Really feeling the heart of God for the orphaned? See how you can be more regularly involved in the life {lives} of children in the foster care (local) or orphanage (global) – start building a relationship with them – GET INVESTED!

I could point to alot of resources around me if you need help with this. Here’s a link to my church’s website (Newsong) that focuses on helping the orphaned.  If you want our need more specific help you can email me at shannon{dot}overpeck at gmail {dot} com.

Day #1::Ethical Consumerism

2006-12-03 All stars christmas shopping
Image by [ henning ] via Flickr

“Business will change the world.  It will do so faster and more drastically than ever.  And we hold the controls.  If we begin to base our business decisions on our values business will transform to accommodate us, and will take the shape of the values that we hold in common – fairness, compassion, and respect for the earth.” – James Pearson.

‘Tis the season! Everyone has shopping on the brain, right?! And the pressures on to find the PERFECT gift! So this season put the true meaning of Christmas into gifts that you buy. Don’t just buy gifts, but let the gifts you do buy share love and compassion with others – just like God has done for us by sending Jesus. Put your money where your heart is (not other other way around).  Let your purchases reflect the true heart of God – love and compassion.

Purchase gifts from businesses that are making a difference in the lives of the marginalized, like:
TOMS shoes – With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One
Krochet Kids – great beanies and scarfs made by and that support Ugandan women
Acholli Beads – beautiful paper beaded jewelry made by and in support of women in Africa
Loveless Apparel – stylish apparel that benefits none-profits in the US and around the world

charity: water – where 100% of the money that is given goes to water projects in impoverished areas around the world
Plywood People – Artistic and one-of-a-kind bags and wallets made with reclaimed & recycled billboard materials by Guatemalan urban artists. A percentage of profits builds new homes for Mayan widows.

Or even

Starfish Projects, International Princess Project, Urdenet, Faces Behind The Label, Trade As One, Gobena Coffee or Freedom and Fashion

Take it to the next level: Do ALL your shopping this Christmas with social justice woven into every purchase.

What is the best present you were given {as a child or adult} and why?

“This relief offering is a prod to live at your very best, showing your gratitude to God by being openly obedient to the plain meaning of the Message of Christ. You show your gratitude through your generous offerings to your needy brothers and sisters, and really toward everyone. Meanwhile, moved by the extravagance of God in your lives, they’ll respond by praying for you in passionate intercession for whatever you need. Thank God for this gift, his gift. No language can praise it enough!” 2 Corinthians 9:13-15 (MSG)
