Day 4: In Word & Deed

“Most good things have been said far too many times and just need to be lived.” – Shane Claiborne

It’s crazy and crowed wherever you go this time of year. Put to practice loving a stranger today by letting others go infront of you – at the store, driving in your car, when at your local coffee shop; maybe even while waiting for a table at a busy restaurant.

“If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.” – 1 Corinthians 13:1

Day #7:: Orphans

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27 (NIV)

God cares deeply for orphans…

We see this not only in the new testament in Jesus’ teachings, but also in the Old testamant. God has called us to visit with those that are orphaned, “episkeptomai” in the greek, as He episkeptmai with us with Jesus. Christ did not have brief chat with mankind. His visit was a direct, personal interaction with mankind.

In the US (in 2004) there were 2.9 orphans. Today there are estimated over 143 million orphans in the world. That is enough children to go three times around the world at the equator.  – OrphansHope.org

 Today’s GOODxmas call to action is to find a local foster care agency or international orphanage that you can send a gift or meet a need. Really feeling the heart of God for the orphaned? See how you can be more regularly involved in the life {lives} of children in the foster care (local) or orphanage (global) – start building a relationship with them – GET INVESTED!

I could point to alot of resources around me if you need help with this. Here’s a link to my church’s website (Newsong) that focuses on helping the orphaned.  If you want our need more specific help you can email me at shannon{dot}overpeck at gmail {dot} com.

“Preach the gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.” – St. Francis

Make an ornament with a picture of a child that you sponser – involve the members of your family (or roommates). Pray throughout the day for him/her as well his/her family and village. If you can, buy a special gift through the sponsor organization for his/her family or village. If you don’t sponsor a child choose a country to focus on, or start sponsoring a child today.

World Vision

Compassion

“The world of the generous gets larger and larger;
the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.
The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed;
those who help others are helped.” Proverbs 11:24-25

“Love put into action is a compelling and attractive worldview”. – Rich Sterns

Have you ever experienced a random gift that was just what you needed at the moment?

Day #1::Ethical Consumerism

2006-12-03 All stars christmas shopping

“Business will change the world.  It will do so faster and more drastically than ever.  And we hold the controls.  If we begin to base our business decisions on our values business will transform to accommodate us, and will take the shape of the values that we hold in common – fairness, compassion, and respect for the earth.” – James Pearson.

‘Tis the season! Everyone has shopping on the brain, right?! And the pressures on to find the PERFECT gift! So this season put the true meaning of Christmas into gifts that you buy. Don’t just buy gifts, but let the gifts you do buy share love and compassion with others – just like God has done for us by sending Jesus. Put your money where your heart is (not other other way around).  Let your purchases reflect the true heart of God – love and compassion.

Purchase gifts from businesses that are making a difference in the lives of the marginalized, like:
TOMS shoes – With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One
Krochet Kids – great beanies and scarfs made by and that support Ugandan women
Acholli Beads – beautiful paper beaded jewelry made by and in support of women in Africa
Loveless Apparel – stylish apparel that benefits none-profits in the US and around the world

charity: water – where 100% of the money that is given goes to water projects in impoverished areas around the world
Plywood People – Artistic and one-of-a-kind bags and wallets made with reclaimed & recycled billboard materials by Guatemalan urban artists. A percentage of profits builds new homes for Mayan widows.

Or even

Starfish Projects, International Princess Project, Urdenet, Faces Behind The Label, Trade As One, Gobena Coffee or Freedom and Fashion

Take it to the next level: Do ALL your shopping this Christmas with social justice woven into every purchase.

What is the best present you were given {as a child or adult} and why?

“This relief offering is a prod to live at your very best, showing your gratitude to God by being openly obedient to the plain meaning of the Message of Christ. You show your gratitude through your generous offerings to your needy brothers and sisters, and really toward everyone. Meanwhile, moved by the extravagance of God in your lives, they’ll respond by praying for you in passionate intercession for whatever you need. Thank God for this gift, his gift. No language can praise it enough!” 2 Corinthians 9:13-15 (MSG)
