A Beautiful Flashback

Our church just started this new curreculum for the children’s ministry – TRU. I’ve been excited about it’s premier. One part of the study is called:: Home Front – it is a resource for the parents on how we can more actively engage in what our kids are learning on Sunday morning.

This week I received an email with my very first Home Front in it. I wasn’t quite sure how it would all go. There are 3 part: Inspire. Equip. Support. I loved the personal story at the beginning – open and real. And at the end {Support} is where they give you idea(s) on how to engage in the upcoming lesson with you’re child.

This Sunday’s main point is “God Created Me to Be in Relationship with Him and Others.” So while the kids were in their bath I read the main scripture verses:: Gen 1:26-31 and I talked about how God made them, and how much He loves them, how much we love them, and how as God was forming them in my “bellie” that he made them with a special purpose.

The Home Front encouraged us to show ultrasound pictures and such. So I got out my oldest’s ultrasound picture and showed it to both him and my little one. Next, I pulled out JC’s little photo album that I haven’t been through in at least a year, which was filled with pictures of his first 3 weeks of life that where spent in the NICU. So many feelings came rushing in. I don’t think I’ve gone through this book with him before, mostly because he is so young. But that was one of the scarriest times for my husband and myself for so many reasons.

In many ways JC should not be here with us today – but he is!!! I know God has something very special planned for his life and this take home gave me a chance to remind him and to remind myself of his beautifully powerful story.

It is way to easy for me in the craziness of the day; boys jumping and wressling which turns into tears and war wounds, or whining and not eating all amongst sleepless nights, to turning my focus away from the things that are most important about my kids. That God CREATED them, He LOVES them and has  beautiful and powerful plan for them. As their parent I am blessed, but also challenged in my role of walking, loving, helping, and supporting them along in their journey of life.

I’m not sure at 3 1/2 years old and 19 months how much of the Home Front and Sunday morning lessons they are able to understand, but I know that it helped to change my heart today. And maybe that’s the best thing I can teach and model for my kids – to be open and vulnerable towards God and let him change my heart and my life!

What has God taught you through your kids?
